A photobooth is one of those party details that guests remember long after the food is gone. Professional booths are expensive to rent and a hassle to transport. The good news is that with the right gear and a decent app, you can put together something that looks polished for a fraction of the cost — and pack it into a bag.

This is the first setup in a series of photobooth configurations ranging from quick and casual to full production. Start here.

The ring light setup

A ring light is the easiest way to get flattering, smooth light with minimal setup. Since it only requires one stand, it's compact, easy to move, and perfect for smaller parties at home or in an office. The built-in iPad holder means you only need one piece of equipment to handle both the camera and the lighting.

If you already have an iPad, you're most of the way there. If you don't, this is a reasonable excuse to finally get one.

Gear:

How to set it up

  1. Assemble the ring light and secure your iPad to the built-in holder.
  2. Position the light just above chest level and angle it slightly downward for the most flattering look.
  3. Adjust brightness until faces are well-lit in the app preview without blowing out highlights.

Once the light is dialed in, open Simple Booth HALO and choose a theme. There are 60+ ready-made options so you can match any party aesthetic quickly.

Tips

Bring gaffer's tape and use it to secure any loose cords to the floor. Nobody wants to trip over a power cable mid-pose.

Set a small side table nearby for guests to put their drinks down before stepping in for a photo.

Use a hotspot to keep the iPad connected. That said, Simple Booth HALO works offline — photos are stored in an upload queue and sync when you reconnect. Getting the app set up and tested before the event saves a lot of scrambling on the day.

Ring lights work best for individuals or small groups. Larger groups may need additional side lighting for even coverage across the frame.

Why this works

The whole setup fits into a bag, takes about ten minutes to assemble, and produces consistently good results without any photography experience. For birthday parties, office events, or intimate gatherings, it punches well above its price point.

More configurations coming — including setups for larger groups and outdoor events.
